Care Instructions

Our curated collections are the result of partnerships and collaborations with the world’s finest artisans.

Generations of knowledge have been meticulously passed down and synergised with the latest technical advances.

To continue to enjoy your pieces for years to come, please note our Care Instructions below.

General

All Fairfax & Roberts Home pieces are unsuitable for oven and freezer use. Avoid rapid changes in temperature to minimise risk of cracking and shattering.

Use a soft cloth to separate items when storing to prevent scratching.

Cup and pot stains can be removed with a baby-utensil sterilising solution.

Avoid leaving acidic foods on porcelain after meals (marinades, vinaigrettes, and acidic sauces) to minimise any colour change of the decorative finishes.

Crystal

Handwashing
The recommended cleaning method is handwashing. Simply combine cool to warm water with mild, liquid-only detergent and clean with a non-abrasive cloth. For extra shine, add a few drops of methylated spirits to the water and detergent mixture to protect the crystal’s brilliance. Always rinse thoroughly and polish with a non-abrasive cloth. Items with gold rims are to be handwashed-only to preserve the gold accents.

Hand-Painted Crystal
Handwash only. Combine cool to warm water with gel-only detergent and dry with a non-abrasive cloth.

Muslin Crystal
Handwash only. When hand-drying, avoid filling the coupe with a towel. Place both hands on either the foot or the cup to avoid pressure on the stem.

Dishwasher
If choosing to use a dishwasher, select a ‘Glassware/Delicate’ cycle using a minimal amount of mild, liquid-only detergent. Select a water temperature under 40 degrees and ensure adequate space is allowed between crystalware to avoid breakage.

Once the wash cycle is complete, open your dishwasher door to allow the steam to escape as the steam contains detergent residues which can leave marks on the crystal.

Thermal Shock
Avoid large variations in temperature when washing crystal. Always remember to cool your crystal with cold water before placing in ice buckets.

Murano Glass

Handwashing
The recommended cleaning option is handwashing. Simply combine cool to warm water with mild, liquid-only detergent and a non-abrasive cloth. Items with gold rims are to be handwashed-only to preserve the brilliance of gold accents.

Dishwasher
If choosing to use a dishwasher to clean solid colour items without gold rim decoration, select a ‘Glassware/Delicate’ cycle using a minimal amount of mild, liquid-only detergent. Select a water temperature under 40 degrees and ensure adequate space is allowed between glassware to avoid breakage.

Once the wash cycle is complete, open your dishwasher door to allow the steam to escape as the steam contains detergent residues.

Flatware & Silverware

Oxidation
Over time, silver reacts with airborne sulphur and gradually loses lustre by firstly acquiring a yellow tint, which increasingly blackens. The rate of oxidation depends on exposure to heat and humidity.

Using your silverware regularly will prevent darkening between uses and regular cleaning will allow the true silver patina to develop.

Handwashing
Avoid sulphur-containing products such as rubber gloves, rubber fabric and elastic, when washing as they can encourage ‘oxidation’.

Precious and Natural Elements
Flatware with mounted handles containing wood and semi-precious stones are to be handwashed only.

If soaking is required, immerse the head only, leaving the handle above water.

Arts Décoratifs Collections
This prestigious line is individually assembled by accomplished silversmiths and requires special attention – handwashing is recommended.

If soaking is required, immerse the head only, leaving the decorative handle above water. The decorative lacquered handles are coated with a protective varnish and do not require special attention.

Prestige Collections
Due to intricate setting techniques, these pieces are hand-wash only solid colour items without gold rim decoration. Easily restore shine without rubbing by using the Ercuis ‘Silver Cutlery Rinse’ and avoid silver-cleaning pastes and impregnated gloves to prevent scratches and damage to the pieces.

Prestige, Arts Décoratifs Collections and Collections containing precious and natural elements are recommended for handwashing only.

Dishwashing
Separate silver and stainless steel items in separate dishwashing baskets, as well as sharper flatware such as knives with stainless steel blades.
Clean using a powder-only detergent on a gentle cycle. Once the wash cycle is complete, open your dishwasher door to allow the steam to escape as the steam contains detergent residues.

Porcelain

Dishwasher
If choosing to use a dishwasher to clean porcelain, select a ‘Gentle/Mild Wash’ cycle using a liquid-only detergent and decalcification agent to minimise decoration abrasion.

Once the wash cycle is complete, open your dishwasher door to prevent condensation.

Large and solid pieces should be washed by hand.

Precious Metals
Gold and platinum rim decorations on porcelain have been tested for 1,000 wash cycles in dishwashers. When using a dishwasher for pieces with precious metal detailing, select a ‘Gentle/Mild Wash’ cycle using a liquid-only detergent and decalcification agent to minimise decoration abrasion.
All precious metal rimmed porcelain is unsuitable for microwave ovens.

Handwashing
For all porcelain items, it is best to use a liquid detergent and non-abrasive cloth.

Hand-painted Porcelain
For hand-painted porcelain, handwash-only using a liquid detergent and non-abrasive cloth.
